American Hardcore Volume 1
The recordings for American Hardcore Volume 1 were, like most hardcore recordings, made in a basement. Fortunately, this particular basement room was properly treated with over 300 square feet of rigid fiberglass on the ceilings, walls and corners. The floor is untreated bare wood, to keep the recordings from sounding muffled and lifeless.
The drums used were made by Slingerland in the late 70s according to this chart. The cymbals are Zildjians of unknown origin. Only 4 microphones were used: a Shure SM57 on the Snare, an Audio-Technica Pro 25 on the kick, and a spaced pair of Oktava MC012s for the overheads.
Chicago Black Volume 1
The recordings for Chicago Black Volume 1 were made in the same studio as American Hardcore Volume 1, with the same drums. The cymbals, though, were all made by Paiste throughout the past 20 years. Once again 4 microphones were used: a Shure SM57 on the Snare, an Audio-Technica Pro 25 on the kick, and a spaced pair of Naiant X-Qs for the overheads.
